The ideal weight is defined as that which confers the maximum life expectancy to a person.

There are several ways to assess the nutritional status, however, the issue how much I have to weigh and what is my ideal weight is a recurring topic of interest.

According to the guide of the United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO), the evaluation of nutritional status is carried out with the following parameters:

Weight, height, percentage (%) or amount of fat contained in your whole body, your age and sex.

From these data reference patterns are consulted, a reference pattern is a table that is constructed from the data of representative populations.

These representative populations have previously been identified as healthy and well nourished, according to age and sex.

The most common reference tables are those of the World Health Organization (WHO) and those of CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) .

What is my ideal weight?

When obtaining the classification data of the population, being in the “normal” range corresponds to the highest life expectancy that there was in the population studied.

One of the reference instruments to know your nutritional status is the Body Mass Index (BMI), which considers the relationship between weight and height.

The BMI is obtained by dividing your weight in kilograms and multiplying that result by the square of your height in meters (kg/m2).

The other form of reference is found in calculating the ideal weight from the weight and height data.

To obtain it, we present the following operations:

For women:

Ideal weight: Height 2 (21.5) That is, your height squared multiplied by 21.5

For men:

Ideal weight: Height 2 (23) That is, your height squared multiplied by 23.

Example: If it is a woman who measures 1.68 meters, multiply 1.68 × 1.68 = 2.82 That result multiplied by 21.5 = 60.6.

Although there are other formulas to know, this is the fastest and most direct way to obtain your ideal weight reference.

It is always better to assist with your specialist for a personalized diagnosis. BMI and ideal weight are not diagnostic criteria.

What does the BMI mean?

The classification of the Body Mass Index orients the weight of each individual.

  • If the BMI is between 20 and 25, it is considered normal, ideal, or correct weight for the person.
  • If the BMI is less than 20 it is considered thin. If it is below 18.5 it may be too low and consultation with the doctor may be necessary.
  • If the BMI is between 25 and 30, it is considered moderate overweight, although in general weight loss will be recommended
  • If the BMI is between 30 and 40, it is considered frank obesity, which will recommend a significant weight loss
  • If the BMI is greater than 40 is considered to be very obese and more aggressive treatments can be considered

It is recommended to periodically assess the BMI, every year or every two years, for example, and to consult with the doctor when necessary to establish treatment for obesity or low weight and to evaluate the risks that an altered BMI may have on your Health.

When the BMI is in the normal range, between 20 and 25, try to maintain the weight. Healthy habits such as a healthy, balanced and varied diet, the regular practice of exercise and avoiding the use of tobacco is the most advisable.
